Midwives provide care and support to women and their families, during pregnancy, throughout labour and during the period after a baby’s birth. Band 5 is the entry level for all midwives.

Qualifications & skills to access role
Option 1 – BSc Midwifery: More information on Midwifery BSc here
Various health related Access Courses through Bradford, Keighley, Shipley and Craven Colleges are available to enter a degree course.
Option 2 – Degree apprenticeships: if offered by an employer
A Levels/BTEC or equivalent are required to enter a BSc degree course (including apprenticeship).
Option 3 – MSc Midwifery: for people with an existing nursing and non nursing degree – More information on Midwifery MSc here.
Note – 18 month top up courses supported by the employer are in development for people with a Nursing BSc to transfer to Midwifery.

Progression
- Midwife band 6 — after about 18 months working as a Band 5, midwives can progress on to Band 6
