Journey to Working in Health Care

Pansy Wills – journey to working in health and care

After leaving my previous job as manager of a mental health accommodation unit due to Covid -19 issues I took time out before looking for work again. I decided to work part time and came across the post of Covid Support Worker with Bradford Council. I started work in the Covid Hub in April 2021. A place within the Administration team became available so I moved across in June.

The Covid pandemic led to many people being recruited in to temporary support roles.  With the pandemic becoming ever more just part of our daily lives, the contracts for many of these Covid Support Workers contracts were coming to an end in December 2021.

In October, an email was sent to all staff asking for expressions of interest in becoming an employment coach for the Health & Social Care Partnership, supporting the Covid Support Workers find alternative employment focusing on promoting jobs in the Health and Social Care sector. I was successful in my application and started full time work in December 2021.

As the post was temporary (with an extension until June 2022) I continued to look for a permanent job and through my work with the other Covid Support Workers and promotion of the Health & Social Care sector, I found a post that suited my requirements – part time work, local to my home and working for the NHS! I started as a medical staff rota co-ordinator in May 2022.
