Multiple states across the country had been issued advisories for wintry weather by the National Weather Service (NWS) as of early Thursday, including much of the Northeast as well as Alaska and Colorado.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has announced multiple winter weather advisories spanning from the Northeast to Alaska and Colorado, warning residents to prepare for potentially hazardous conditions.

Why It Matters

In Alaska, several inches of snow are expected to make driving dangerous, while frost and freeze warnings in the Northeast could harm outdoor vegetation and crops. These warnings highlight the growing impact of seasonal weather patterns across multiple regions.

What To Know

Winter weather advisories are active in central Alaska, specifically near the Chena Hot Springs Resort area and along Chena Hot Springs Road east of milepost 34, where 3 to 5 inches of snow are forecast.

Another alert covers areas along the Steese Highway, up to approximately mile marker 90, and the higher elevations of the White Mountains, where up to 6 inches of snow could accumulate.

According to the NWS, โ€œPlan on slippery road conditions. The hazardous conditions could impact the Thursday evening and Friday morning commutes.โ€ These advisories remain in effect from 2 p.m. Thursday to 10 p.m. AKDT Friday.

The NWS also warned of slippery roads in Californiaโ€™s Westgard Pass and Nevadaโ€™s Lee and upper Kyle Canyons. As snow levels lower, even reduced elevations could experience light snow, posing unexpected risks for drivers.

Travelers are urged to slow down, check road updates โ€” by calling 1-800-427-7623 for California or 511 for Nevada โ€” and prepare for snow-packed roads, gusty winds, and limited visibility. The agency emphasized that travel in these areas may become very difficult.

What People Are Saying

NWS Las Vegas posted on X: โ€œExpect unsettled conditions today across the region, with pockets of rain showers, high mountain snow, and gusty winds. Improving conditions and a gradual warming trend will follow for the remainder of the week.โ€

In another post, the agency added: โ€œWinds, rain, and snow are on the way! Gusts to 40โ€“50 mph are expected, with snow accumulations for locations above 7,000 ft in CA/NV. If youโ€™ll be traveling, check the latest forecast and road conditions, and stock your winter travel safety kit.โ€

What Happens Next

Winter weather advisories for mountain regions in California and Nevada will remain in effect through late Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning. The NWS advises travelers to stay alert as conditions may change quickly, with high winds and snowfall causing sudden drops in visibility and deteriorating road conditions.
